A Rich History of
Growth

Research Capital is home to some of the best and brightest financial minds across Canada. Our formula for success has been tried and tested since the early 1920s, and through markets ups and downs Research Capital has demonstrated great poise, strength, and independence—the cornerstone of our culture.

1921
Wine merchant W. Harold Mara and Leigh M. McCarthy, past director of Manufactures Life Insurance, found Mara McCarthy Stock and Bond Brokers. The new firm underwrites many notable Canadian companies, including Canada Malting and Hiram Walker Gooderham & Worts.
1930
Harold Mara is elected President of the Toronto Stock Exchange and is said to be one of the organization's most popular heads.
1939
William Hatch and Ken Andras join Mara and McCarthy as partners.
1941
The company becomes Stanton, Hatch and McCarthy. Sidney Hetherington joins as a partner. The firm is a primary distributor of the War Bonds and Victory Bonds used to support Canadian troops in World War II.
1962
The firm becomes Andras, Hatch and Hetherington and continues to earn the reputation as a leading Canadian brokerage dealer whose founders are involved in the country's social welfare.
1962
Founder Kenneth B. Andras (whose son, Kenneth W. Andras, is a director of the firm) leads a delegation to NATO that helps negotiate the Community of Nations blueprint and is also a founder of international relief organization C.A.R.E. Canada.
1972
David C. Hetherington, son of Sidney Hetherington, joins the firm and still serves as an active member today.
1985
A merger with the investment dealer Canavest House results in the firm Andras Canavest Hetherington Limited, whose four principals remain with the firm to this day: Kenneth W. Andras, David C. Hetherington, Andrew C. Selbie, and Patrick G. Walsh. The firm acquires Research Securities of Canada and the highly regarded Calgary office of the firm F.H. Deacon Hodgson.
1989
The firm's name is changed to Research Capital Corporation, reflecting a multi-line capital markets and wealth management platform.
2010
Research Capital acquires J.F. Mackie and Co Ltd. and is re-named Mackie Research Capital Corporation (MRCC). MRCC's parent company Mackie Research Capital Financial Corporation creates Centre Lane Trading to enter the electricity trading business (now - Research Power Corporation).
2013
MRCC completes the acquisition of NCP Northland Capital Partners - an investment dealer focused on the junior resource sector in Canada, the US, and the UK.
2014
MRCC completes the acquisition of Calgary-based Jennings Capital Inc. - a firm with an established investment banking reputation in the upstream resource sector.
2015
MRCC completes the acquisition of Vancouver-based Jordan Capital Markets Inc. - a high-growth private client investment and venture investment banking firm.
2021
On April 1, 2021, the firm celebrates its 100th anniversary and returns to its roots by re-naming to Research Capital Corporation (RCC). We are committed to building RCC into one of Canada's premier investment banks and asset managers.
